ENGINEERING TIPS

Pump Coupling Guard

shared by Mr. H. T. Makwana; Asst. Engineering Manager, Camphor and Allied Products Ltd.

Pump manufacturers are supplying pumps along with coupling guards, but maintenance fitters are not taking proper care, as it requires. This results in failure or missing of coupling guards. The other reasons for coupling guard failure is its design defect such as small nut-bolts or screw for fixing & weak design. Here above figure shows a simple & long lasting coupling guard.

This can be fabricated from a GI sheet without any special machinery or skill as follows.

  1. Take a GI sheet with 18 to 22--gauge thickness. Cut a long strip from sheet with width equal to required coupling guard width plus 40 mm.

  2. For safety & strength purpose, both the long sharp edges are to be folded to 180 degree along the length. ( The additional 40 mm width )

  3. Now prepare end clamps by sharp “U” bending as per required length & gap. The end clamps should be tight push fit in base frame.

  4. Lastly give main top side “U” bend at the centre with required radius manually by using any round object or pipe.

The main advantages for using this design is

  • Simple & Economical design.

  • Maintenance friendly because it may be removed from position without any tools just by pulling clamp ends apart.

  • If the coupling guard widened by removal several times, it can be reformed to original shape by just hand press or light hammering.

  • It covers coupling completely for better safety.

  • For additional safety purpose, if requires additional holes may be drilled in coupling guard at places where base frame holes are matching for inserting pins or bolts.
