Dr. Rajendra Kumar

Dr. Rajendra
Kumar
Graduated in
metallurgical engineering in 1950 from the Banaras Hindu
University,
obtained the Master’s and the PhD degrees
in physical metallurgy from the University of
Sheffield, UK. The University conferred on him in the year 1974
its highest degree of DOCTOR OF METALLURGY – the first on any
Indian – in recognition of his polished contributions to
metallurgical sciences and technology.
Dr. Rajendra
Kumar had joined the CSIR as a Junior Scientific Assistant and
rose to become Scientist (Director) at the National
Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur and Director of the
Regional Research Laboratory, Bhopal.
His research interests covered a broad spectrum: structure of
liquid metals and alloys, technology of melt treatments and
filtration of aluminium alloy melts, development of aluminium
alloys, the phenomenon of creep and high temperature service,
failure investigations etc.
He was the
“Expert National Coordinator” for a nation wide research scheme
on boiler tube failures, sponsored by the Central board of
Irrigation & power, Govt of India and also a member of the
committee to draft the VIII plan proposals for R & D in the
thermal power sector.
Dr. Kumar
continues to be variously professionally consulted in failure
and RLA studies
and considered to be a leading expert
in that area.

Co-author in the book ‘Vibration and Oscillation of Hydraulic
Machinery’ published by editorial board International Committee
on Book Series in Hydraulic Machinery, Beijing, published by

An expert in Vibration Monitoring,
situated at Lancashire, England, who has agreed to share his
knowledge through our discussion forums.
His
professional career started in AUG 78 with BRITISH COAL - Sutton
Manor Colliery, providing mechanical support to, and
installation of, all coal production systems and high speed
conveyance systems from coal face to surface. In June 88 he was
in total control of all aspects of Routine Condition Monitoring
in this organization. From MAY 90 to Nov 92, he was with
MONITION Ltd. first as Site Service Engineer and then as Asst.
Operation Manager, responsible for the installation, set-up and
acquisition of machine vibration data on various contract sites
and in-depth analysis of certain areas in the event of suspected
machine defects. His other duties included database management,
Control of the Ferrographic Analysis Department, liaison with
Site Engineers and Managers, system demonstrations and on-site
training in TEC Intel-Trend Software and the 1325 Smart Meter
Data Collector, PL31 Data Collector and ENTEK Software. After
that he worked for two years for COLGATE-PALMOLIVE; Salford,
Manchester and then joined AV TECHNOLOGY; Stockport, Manchester,
where he was In charge of the day-to-day running of a £100kpa
vibration monitoring operation for a large Oil refinery,
reporting to the Operations Director and Production Unit
Managers and gathered valuable experience.
Presently he is working with SHELL INDUSTRIAL SERVICES as
Project Manager - Asset Monitoring Centre of Excellence (Global
Position), where he joined in Feb 2000 as Equipment Condition
Monitoring Advisor - Shell Europe.

for over 33 years with ABB-ABL, a leading boiler maker in India
and was General Manager In Charge of Engineering Division
comprising of Performance and System Design Department, Drawing
& Design (Mechanical) Office and Instrumentation and Control
Department of the company, which provided him with many

shooting, failure Analysis and formulating corrective measures
as well as providing technical support for RLA as well as R&M
